As Parents to a child in Stage 2 of the On Purpose Parents Plan, your role is what we refer to as a Crafter and your goal is that you will “Nurture Their Faith.” You recognize that you’re the most influential person in your elementary-aged child’s life. This is where you instill confidence in their identity, help shape their values, and provide the positive reinforcement they need.
Here are 3 actions you can take as their Crafter that will “Nurture Their Faith”:
1) Instill Confidence in your Child’s Identity
This is so vital at this crucial developmental stage. Help your child understand that Jesus created them and has a purpose and plan for their life. Allow children to express their uniqueness, celebrate their successes, and explore their interests in a secure environment. Strong character starts with confidence of knowing “whose” they are and who they are.
2) Shape their Values
As a primary influence in their life, you significantly impact your child’s values. Read and talk about God’s Word, share personal and family stories, and model the values you want children to embrace. Do this regularly and consistently for it to have a lasting impact on your child.
3) Provide Positive Reinforcement
Each step of growth and tiny win is significant. Applaud their efforts, achievements, and good behavior. Positive reinforcement promotes self-worth and helps them understand your values. Encouragement breeds strength and resilience. It’s also important to continually remind them about God’s and your unconditional love for them.
“Nurture Their Faith” is the Goal
Acting as your child’s Crafter, you lay a foundation to help them develop their character, make wise choices, and recognize and experience consequences. This will boost their confidence, promote responsibility and accountability, and lead to them growing in their faith.
Embrace the joy in every shared experience, celebrate the small victories, and appreciate the privilege of being the guiding hands in your child’s journey. Your influence is profound, and your dedication as their Crafter sets the stage for a future filled with a life that is honoring to God. Enjoy the crafting process, cherish the moments, and know that you are making a lasting impact on your child’s life.
