How To Win In The COACH Role

As Parents to a child in Stage 4 of the On Purpose Parents Plan, your role is what we refer to as a Coach and your goal is that you will help your high school aged child “Activate Their Faith.” The high school years are a time of increased independence, self-discovery, and decision-making.

Let’s look at 5 practical ways to be the Coach your teenager needs to help them be successful, develop a sense of purpose, and put their faith into action:

1) Involve Them in Decision Making
High schoolers are navigating a path towards independence. Involve your teen in important decisions about their education, extracurricular activities, and future plans. This not only fosters a sense of responsibility but also empowers them to make informed choices.

2) Offer Timely Advice
As the Coach of your teen, your guidance is invaluable. Instead of dictating how things should be done, offer timely advice. Share your experiences, highlight potential consequences, and encourage critical thinking. This approach allows your teen to learn from their decisions while knowing they have your support and wisdom to rely on.

3) Inspire a Sense of Purpose
Help your teen discover their sense of purpose by encouraging them to explore their passions and interests. Discuss their goals, dreams, and aspirations. By aligning their faith with a greater purpose, they can find meaning in their actions and contributions to the world.

4) Discover Their Unique S.H.A.P.E.
Every individual has unique gifts and talents. Guide your high schooler in discovering their Spiritual gifts, Heart (passions), Abilities, Personality, and Experiences (S.H.A.P.E.). Understanding these aspects empowers them to identify how they can contribute to others and their community and express their faith in meaningful ways.

5) Determine Areas of Service
Putting faith into action often involves service to others. Explore volunteer opportunities at church or on community service projects together. By engaging in acts of kindness and service, your teen can experience the tangible impact of their faith and contribute positively to the world around them.

“Activate Their Faith” is the Goal

As your teen’s Coach during the high school years, enjoy the up-close and personal opportunity to witness their journey towards activating their faith. Your guidance, timely advice, and unwavering support play a pivotal role in shaping not just their decisions but also their sense of purpose.

Embrace the evolving dynamics of your relationship, celebrate their uniqueness, and be amazed at the incredible potential within your teen. Together, as Coach and player in this game of life, you are laying the groundwork for a future where their faith is not just a belief but a powerful force that drives them to make a positive impact on the world.
