Tips on how to keep your cool with your kids.

Tip #1:  Identify your triggers, then tackle just one

  • Awareness is key, what are some patterns and commonality in times where you tend to lose your cool?
  • Pick just one of those areas, and think of ideas/strategies to help you react better in that one situation. be intentional – not just “wishing” and “hoping” to be more patience
  • Example: feeling pressured to make a decision when distracted

Tip #2:  Set Age-appropriate expectations and make sure to communicate what they are

  • Consider the difference between childishness and foolishness – it helps you pick and choose battles
  • Communicate and get on same page as to expectations – often times we are enabling kids not to meet our unspoken expectations (asking kids to clean room example)

Tip #3:  Allow yourself to be human

  • Maybe losing patience can help us realize some areas in our own lives we need to address
  • Be kind to yourself when you mess up, this helps you extend kindness to others
  • Learn to apologize to your kids
  • All this is a great model for kids, and creates a culture of patience and graciousness within the family.
